PRT rebuild protocol01 — 09
Reconditioned to measurement. Not guesswork.
Introduction
PRT Engineering Works provides comprehensive engine reconditioning and precision machining services for engines and major engine components.
From initial cleaning, inspection and dimensional measurement through machining, component reconditioning, assembly and testing, our focus is on restoring components using the correct machining and inspection processes.
Core services
One standard runs across everything we do: measure first, machine to specification, rebuild clean. These are the primary services behind a PRT reconditioned engine.

The PRT process
Every job is evaluated according to its condition and requirements. Components are inspected and measured before the appropriate reconditioning and machining processes are selected.
The engine or component is received, identified and its rebuild requirement is recorded.
The unit is stripped down so every part can be inspected on its own merits.
Components are cleaned so surfaces, passages and damage can be assessed honestly.
Crack detection and visual inspection decide what is reusable and what is not.
Bores, journals, decks and housings are measured against the specification.
Only the metal that must be removed is removed — to bring each surface back into spec.
Clean, measured components are assembled in the correct sequence with correct clearances.
The finished unit is checked and verified before it is signed off.
The engine or component is protected and handed over ready for fitment.
Precision & measurement
Engine reconditioning depends on knowing the condition of each component. PRT uses dimensional inspection and precision measuring equipment throughout the reconditioning process to evaluate wear, machining requirements and final condition.

Machinery
A selected view of the machining PRT carries out in-house — boring, honing, grinding, surfacing and precision measurement that bring components back to specification.
Selected capabilities — comprehensive in-house machining, inspection and engine reconditioning equipment, listed on the machinery page.
Applications
PRT reconditioning and machining work applies across engine types rather than to a list of brands. Coverage is confirmed from the engine itself — its make, model and condition — not from a generic claim.
Engine & fuel baseline
The work is primarily diesel engine reconditioning — naturally aspirated, turbocharged, common-rail and mechanical-injection diesel engines — with petrol engines handled where applicable. Scope for a specific engine is confirmed from the actual unit.
Quality & inspection
Inspection and measurement are integral to the reconditioning process. Components are evaluated before machining and checked through the relevant stages of reconditioning and assembly.
Components are checked against their specification before any machining is planned.
Castings and critical parts are crack-tested by the method appropriate to them.
Blocks and heads are verified coolant-tight after machining.
Bores, journals, decks and clearances are measured — the numbers decide the work.
Fasteners are tightened to specification, in the correct sequence.
A finished unit is checked and verified before it leaves the shop.
Reconditioned engines
PRT Engineering Works also undertakes complete engine rebuilding and reconditioning. Contact our team with the engine make, model and requirement to discuss availability and options.
01
Tell us the engine and what it needs to do. Details are confirmed from the actual unit, its condition and its specification.
02
The engine or component is assessed — stripped, cleaned, inspected and measured — so the reconditioning scope is decided on facts.
03
Machining, replacement of unfit components and assembly follow the PRT reconditioning process in the correct sequence.
04
The finished unit is checked and documented before it is protected and handed over for fitment.
Our Work
PRT carries out engine reconditioning and component machining across these categories. Documented real projects — engines received, the machining carried out and the measured outcome — are added as they are captured and approved.

FAQ
The fundamentals, answered straight. Service-specific questions sit on each service page.
Engine reconditioning returns a worn engine or its major components to serviceable condition by machining and rebuilding them to specification — rather than replacing the whole engine. It covers stripping, cleaning, inspection, measurement, machining of critical surfaces and reassembly.
A repair typically fixes a single fault. A recondition restores the component or engine as a system: surfaces are measured and machined back into specification, clearances are set correctly, and the unit is rebuilt in a controlled sequence.
The work is primarily diesel engine reconditioning — naturally aspirated, turbocharged, common-rail and mechanical-injection diesel engines — with petrol engines handled where applicable. Coverage spans commercial-vehicle, passenger-vehicle, tractor and agricultural, industrial, generator, and construction and earthmoving engines. Which specific engine is handled is confirmed on enquiry from the actual unit, its condition and its specification.
Wear and distortion are often invisible to the eye. Bores, journals, decks and housings are measured because the numbers decide what machining is needed — removing only the metal that must be removed to bring the component back into specification.
The more PRT can see and measure, the more accurate the quote: the engine or component itself, its condition, what the rebuild needs to achieve, and any parts the customer intends to supply. A quote from a specification of the job is always more reliable than one given sight-unseen.
